Power or Sanity?

I had to write this out because I am uncertain of a "situation" let's say. I have asked my significant other & my BFF for advice and all I hear from them is my own answer. So, I figured if I vent it out and go back to read it I will most likely "LISTEN" to myself & know the result.

For months I had been struggling with health issues and am somewhat on the road to 100%. I was not actively searching for employment. One day I decided to look (out of curiosity, what was out there) one particular ad, I responded to. I had an immediate response for an interview. It was set up 2 days later. I went to the interview and was "hired on the spot."  Now, for some odd reason (this should of been a warning sign for me) everytime I get hired this way; it turns out to be a wrong choice. I walked out of the office smiling; simply happy that first application, first interview I was blessed to be hired. I accepted.

A day later "The boss" tells me he will be putting me in the "MANAGER" position. I was flattered that he felt I qualified but completely shock that I was thrown into all of it. Oh well, I thought with all the experience I have I could make this work. The boss & staff seen exactly what accomplishments I achieved in the first 2 weeks.

Well, it's only been an exact month and I am ready to walk away. I have never seen such "Imcompetence" in my life. Staff members constantly complaining "Why don't I have more hours; yet when asked to come in; they are full of excuses." Staff showing up late, showing absolutely NO ENTHUSIASM to work, contradicting statements from "The Boss", working an entire 3 weeks before you actually see a paycheck from the prior 2 wks. Ex: Week of  Dec 17-21 & 24th (yes we worked Christmas Eve) through the 28th, I will be receiving paycheck on January 15th.

There are employees who have been there for several years, still making the same amount of money & still complaining about it. In Reality WHOSE fault is that. Really?? As an employee for any company one works for you should set yourself up with some goals, sitting at front desk for years making the same pay, not moving forward should be a WAKEUP CALL.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, trust me I felt I was blessed to be hired; however I also feel that I need to connect to a facility that will return what I can give. After all that I have seen and heard & the choices of "The Boss" I find myself contemplating on giving my 2 weeks notice.  I do not wish to waste his time nor mine in trying to fix something that CLEARLY is too late to fix. Whosever fault it was for the creation of all the "missing charts, lack of communication/organization with agencies for remittance, steady & constant patient flow, loss of agencies & NOT being software UPDATED is no one else's fault but "The Boss".  He insists that HE trusted the wrong employees. Uhmm, I beg to differ. When you are negligent with submitting the necessary paperwork to provide to your staff, of course things will begin to fall apart. This is when they become outraged and say comments such as "You're replaceable, How could you let this happen?" ETC, ETC. Why are Dr.'s so affraid to ADMIT they get lazy and don't want to DO the ADMINISTRATIVE aspect of their work.

Anywhoo, being severely stricken with the FLU the past week I continued going to work and finally couldn't take it anymore; ending up in the ER; taken off work for 3 days. I have the "Incompetent staff texting me "Where is a File, I can't stay late, How do I scan a document ???????? REALLY?????  I was speechless.

All these weeks I kept telling myself, I can do this, I can turn this place around, I can. I can. I REALIZED I spoke the truth. I CAN. I simply choose NOT TOO. I am a strong, hispanic, educated, confidant woman who can conquer much & succeed in many aspects of life; NEVERTHELESS I prefer to keep a sane mind while doing so.

I APPLAUD all those managers that have dealt with or continue to deal with "Bosses" who refuse to do their notes, blame the entire staff for their laziness and most of all for UNDERAPPRECIATING the ROLE of the MANAGER..

After typing this blog. I have read it and am sticking to my gut feeling of going in tomorrow &  giving my 2 weeks notice.  The thrill of POWER is not worth losing my SANITY.

  1. Ok you known me for awhile and you known where I worked before and the problems of being a manager I had! I could give my thoughts in this and in no way am I trying to offend anyone or yourself on the advice or gut feeling you have. I wanna speak from my opinion and experience but I say stick with your job!!! Don't let other people bring you down and make you wanna quit your job. The main trait you need in being a manager is being "ruthless" if u don't have that your not cut out to be a manger. I know you and your a big sweet heart but you have a ruthless side! If someone complains about hours let them know the situation if they keep complaining tell them nicely "thank you for your your services they are no longer needed." There thousands of people out there who will be happy with 10hrs of work a week. They can't do a task that was most likey in their job description when they applied for the position "thanks for your time" I garuntee once you fire someone for being incompetent that whole place will fall in line cuz they will value their job alot more and not complain. And if your "boss" has a problem with you running things the way you run them let him know he gave you this position cuz he seen something in you that would rock this place and get it standing on two feet simply let him know your doing what will make him and his business succeed. I promise if you run in like your not afraid of anything you will clean that place up fast! I read a book awhile back it has a saying "don't be afraid of anything utill you have a foot in the grave!" My advice is give it another month....instead of putting in your two weeks notice go in there and RUN things you be THE BOSS!! If your boss don't like it walk out tell him your gonna run things the way you see fit! I promise he will not have a problem cuz that's why he hired you in that position!! He knows you have POWER & SANITY to keep an insane place in order! You just have to see it in yourself! I know u have it!
    Good luck

  2. WoW. I like the words of encouragement. Yes I do have a "ruthless" side but I was warned to leave that at home & be professional. Now you have me thinking...

    Thank You.

  3. If your boss told you that let him know you have to do what you have to do as a manager to help him and his business! If he doesn't agree with that put ur two weeks in! I'm positive he will love that your challenging him and his authority cuz that's what he needs! Look what happend when he let it run crazy it's full of incompetent people! His gonna have to trust u!!

  4. Oh and also you could be ruthless and professional! I'm not saying go in there and be a complete Biatch! Nooo not that you want employees to value their job! Be intimidating to them! Right now there taking advantage of a sweet heart person now show them that only goes so far! And be a professional about showing those boundaries
